When my wife, Tet, first brought out the idea of “Tumble Tots”, I asked her what our child, Madeleine Renee or “Adjie”, a mere one-year and eight-month old “baby”, would do in a “school” or learning center of babies.
I asked a lot of questions and raised a lot of issues, including the effectiveness or even wisdom of bringing a one-year old child to a “school” at such an early, if not “ungodly” age. But my wife, ever the person who puts so much trust in others, erased my “fears” and told me to just give it a try. Then came the big day. I still remember the day, October 9, 2004. Adjie was “on trial”. As the anxious dad, I watched every move of my baby, keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that everything will go “smoothly” and my baby would not be put in a situation where she will hate school forever. After the first session, I was not only relieved. This was the day that I was going to change my perception about my baby. I realized that I had underestimated my baby’s potential for learning. I was surprised that Adjie could behave and follow small instructions at her tender age, given the proper environment and motivations. After the first session, I could not wait and I immediately demanded from Tet that she enroll Adjie for the regular sessions. For each session that Adjie attends, I can see that my baby becomes more and more interested to learn new things and try different activities, and she is enjoying what she is doing. She has also shown signs of developing her social skills and active and caring personality. I learned that babies who are playing are actually “serious” in what they are doing. The center is indeed a place that caters to the needs of children. They are surrounded by smiling, enthusiastic and very attentive teachers who help the children in the activities, which are carefully and thoughtfully prepared especially for them. The teachers easily know how to get positive response from these sweet, little tots raring to discover the beauty of the things around them. Bringing home Adjie from each session, her dad and mom cannot help but feel secure and even proud of the small things she has accomplished for the day. Tumble Tots has become close to our hearts because this is where our Adjie first learned to discover her small capabilities and develop confidence in herself. |
